If I wasn't completely and utterly convinced of this before tonight- I certainly am now.  Although I don't know if I needed anymore convincing as it is kind of my soapbox  :)  Kids do not need fancy toys!!!  I take so much pride in the fact that aside from our iPad, the boys don't have a single electronic toy.  Not a single toy that does their thinking for them.  And tonight was a precious reminder as to why I am so proud of that.

One of our best friends, Matt, and his brother Andrew were in town from Florida this weekend and we were invited to dinner at their mom and dad's house a few blocks down from us.  The boys hadn't napped and were getting pretty crabby so we were hesitant to even go, but we are lucky to see Matt twice a year so we packed a bucket full of play-doh and headed out, praying for the best.

When Matt's mom busted out a box of his old Micro Machines (when was the last time you heard someone say Micro Machines?!), I knew we were in for a great night  :)  Caleb, little Matt, and big Matt sat on the driveway for a good half an hour playing with tiny 30 year old plastic cars.  They were all in heaven.  All three of them.  I'm truly not certain who was having more fun!  Meanwhile, Jon and I sat in comfy chairs at the table with the grown-ups...  talk about heaven! After dinner,  the boys got into the frog fountain.  We had another glorious hour of grown-up time while the boys experimented with what would float or sink in the fountain and discovered that when you stuff a tiny toy boat into the mouth of a ceramic frog, the frog magically "poops" the boat out the other end!  Seriously- that kind of stuff is good for hours of entertainment when you're a three year old boy!!  We about laughed until we cried.  But the real fun didn't begin until Charlie got the hose out...  there's nothing like looking straight into the mouth of a hose when your brother decides to squeeze the handle!  All the while Jon and I got to sit back, a few feet back, spending quality time at the grown-up table while watching our little boys just be little boys.  They didn't need to be entertained by Game Boys or Leapsters or iPads or anything that requires batteries.  For three hours they were able to entertain themselves with good old fashioned fun.  A good old fashioned racing Micro Machines, splashing in a fountain, spray your brother with a hose kind of fun.  I don't remember the last time Jon and I had such wonderful grown-up time with our friends, and I don't remember the last time I was so proud of our boys  :)  No batteries included.
