C is for Caterpillar

So I think God gave me a little gift to honor in honor of my survival of  my first week of preschool!!  Today was going to be letter C day, but last night I discovered a little gem in our vegetable garden so we started letter C day a few hours early  :)

Now I'm pretty sure that if it weren't for letter C day, we would have considered this little guy to be quite a pest.  But when I went out to pick some basil for dinner and found him munching on our tomato plants, I got all excited and ran back inside to get the boys because...

C is for Caterpillar!!!!
So we spent some time outside with our new friend.  We held him on a twig with some leaves on it and watched him climb all around.  The boys were fascinated by his sticky feet and how he inched along the stick.  We watched him take a few nibbles on the leaves while talking about why he would like eating the leaves at the park more than the leaves in our garden.  After about 15 minutes, we took him across the street to his new home!  Our little friend was the perfect introduction to letter C day!  This morning the boys and I read The Very Hungry Caterpillar by Eric Carle.  We used the story to practice our counting (five days of fruit!) and for picking out "c" words like "cocoon".  Although Caleb insisted we call it a chrysalis, which I figured was close enough to the same thing so we went with it.  After that, we did a little craft where the boys got to make their own caterpillars by dipping the rims of little plastic cups in paint and using them as stamps.  They also got to glue on the head, eyes, and antennae.  Let me just tell you that our gluing skills leave much to be desired.  And cleaned up!!!!  I think I know two little preschoolers who are going to get stockings full of Elmer's glue for Christmas because we are going through the stuff faster than Usain Bolt can run!  Anyways- after that we did some caterpillar math.  The boys practiced numbers 1 through 5 by gluing little pom-pons in rows to make caterpillars of different lengths.  I tried do an adding worksheet but it didn't go as well as planned.  I'm not sure if they were just kind of burned out by that point, or if the way I presented it was confusing.  Both boys know all of their "1+" through 5 when we do them verbally, but they struggled a bit (Matthew more so) when I wrote out the numbers in dots.  We'll try again first thing tomorrow to see if it goes any better at the beginning!!!  Lastly, we practiced writing some letter C's.  Caleb is quite into writing his letters but Matthew needs a bit of encouragement  :)  But he did some great ones!  Then it was off to the park for the rest of the morning in my best attempt to wear them out for a nap.  I'd say that our 45 minutes of preschool were a huge success today.  And so was my nap!!!  Woohoo!!!!

Luckily daddy was home to help us with a bit of a science lesson!

Caterpillar Counting!

Maybe they'll glue themselves to their seats?!??!

Caterpillar stamping

Counting worksheets

Gonna try this again tomorrow.  Maybe it was the making dots with the markers that threw them off...???
