Toddler Logic

So here is something we've learned about toddlers. If you take the time to talk to them, they are actually quite logical. Now please understand that I use the term logical quite loosely. I can almost guarantee that a toddler's logic won't make sense to you or I, nor will it ever justify whatever it is they are trying to explain to you. But Jon and I always take the time to ask the boys why they are doing what they are doing. For one, they are human beings and they deserve to be listened to and respected. And although they are only three, we feel very strongly that we can set the tone for that now. For two, we've learned that it helps us stay calmer when we understand what they were thinking. And I'll be damned, we've been quite amazed. When the boys say or do something so blatantly wrong, something we know they know not to do- or when they are upset about something we did or didn't do- we've found that when we ask them about it, they have a pretty gosh darn good reason for what they did. Good for a three year old. But they are three, so it kinda works out in their favor. And most times, their pint-sized logic helps us respond in a calmer, more constructive manner. Which kinda works out in everyone's favor. But Matthew really threw us for a loop this evening when Jon had discovered that he had colored all over the couch. Literally all over it. Somehow my dear husband was able to calmly ask Matthew why on this great Earth he would do such a thing. Kudos to him for that- because I can say with certainty that I would not have cared in the slightest why on this great Earth my son thought it appropriate to color all over our couch, I would have just yelled. Luckily he asked. Matthew's reply? "But I used white, and white doesn't show up."
