Learning in Action

Tell me and I forget. Teach me and I may remember. Involve me and I will learn. -Benjamin Franklin

This week the boys and I did a few color mixing activities, so we decided to wrap up our lessons with one big hands-on (or should I say feet-on?!) activity. The boys just love the book MousePaint by Ellen Stoll Walsh, so we decided to let them act it out. We made a colossal mess in the living room but we laughed until we cried. While putting together this little video and reflecting on the activity, it occurred to me that this one evening is the best way to sum up our family and the essence of Love, Learn, Play.  To us, learning isn't a separate entity.  It isn't neat and tidy and it doesn't take place within the crisp clean pages of a book or the white walls of a classroom.  Learning is playing.  It's getting your hands (and feet) dirty while you explore the world.  It's messy and fun and full of laughter.  And it takes on a life of its own, pulling you in and captivating you with its wonders.  Playing is learning and both are fearless and limitless.  I hope this might inspire you to step out of the box, get a little paint on your feet, and learn something so deep in your heart and mind that you won't want to ever forget its true joy.  And now the Paddock Twins present...  MOUSEPAINT!
