We've always known the boys have exceptional memories. Before they turned two, they had memorized all nine planets in order. Then they memorized all fifty states and capitals, then half the countries in the world, then the periodic table and then the presidents- all before they turned three. Shortly after they turned three, Matthew pulled out a memory from when he was 13 months old. It was a very minor thing, something we had no photos of and had never spoken of since the day it happened. But it popped into his mind two years later and I'll be damned, it was accurate.
But last night Matthew really blew me away. I still can't wrap my mind around it. We were all sitting on the couch goofing off and singing "Down By the Station"- one of the boys favorite tunes. On one of their CDs they sing it in two part harmony so Jon and I were trying to do it while explaining to the boys what that meant. Turns out Jon failed 3rd grade music class because he is just awful at it! So we tried an easier song- Row, Row, Row Your Boat. Now, we have never really sang this to the boys. But all of a sudden, Matthew asks for the orange book. The little orange book that is upstairs. It has a train in it. There is a mouse on the train track. Somehow I knew exactly what he was talking about, despite the fact that we haven't looked at that book since they were probably 18 months old. And even then, it was never a favorite so it ended up buried upstairs right around that time. We haven't touched it since. But sure enough- the little orange book with the train and the mouse on the railroad track is a "Let's Sing- Mother Goose" nursery rhymes song book. We probably only looked at it a dozen times when the boys were little. But it's got Row, Row, Row Your Boat in it. And that triggered Matthew's memory. So I go upstairs and dig out this book. And on the page with I'll Be Working On the Railroad is a picture of a train. With a mouse on the track. Jon asks him if he remembers anything else about the book. A bear he says. Jon asks what the bear is doing. Sitting next to a tree. Then Jon covers up the picture next to the lyrics for She'll Be Coming Around the Mountain and asks him whats in the picture. Fish. I don't know how, or why, but it appeared that Matthew had photographically memorized the photos in this book that he last saw roughly two years ago. It was truly unbelievable! My own real live elephant- and an adorable one at that!! I sure hope he uses that memory when he's got to remember to take his lunch and his homework to school!
Train with a mouse on the tracks!
Bear sitting by a tree!
An unlikely illustration for She'll Be Coming Around the Mountain... but he was accurate nonetheless!
