Two Days of Preschool

Jon had conferences at school last night and didn't get home until 9:00pm, so I didn't have any time to myself to post our lessons from yesterday...  so today is a two-for-one bonus!

Yesterday we used our letter sticks to practice building letters.  I just let the boys kind of free play with them and see what letters they could create on their own.  They ended up making almost the entire alphabet!  Then they moved onto making shapes (including a circle out of straight sticks!) and following the most obvious of progressions, that led to the creation of rockets and space ships.  Then, in the spirit of Halloween, we started learning the bones in the body.  Right now the boys are in the middle of a brain burst.  As Jon has been saying, "I think you could light up a whole city with your neuronal activity right now!" to which Matthew replies, "What does 'light up a city' mean?"  Their questions are incessant- to the point of driving me nearly insane.  Especially on days like yesterday when Jon doesn't come home and I can't deflect their questions on to him for the last third of the day!  One person can only answer "Excuse me- what does this mean?" so many times in a given day.  I think the threshold for insanity is between 159 and 182 times.  Anyways- in an attempt to direct some of this curious energy into a move positive outlet (i.e. NOT driving mom to the looney bin)- we decided to get the boys started on another memorization task.  Hence the bones in the body!  So we started learning the big bones and we made a skeleton craft for a little extra fun!

Today we reviewed our big bones over breakfast (sight word pancakes!) and then worked on the letter J.  The boys made a letter J out of feathers to help with letter recognition and fine motor skills.  Then they made a jack-o-lantern out of paper pieces.  They are actually starting to put the different parts of a face in the right places!  For a little math work we worked on patterns.  We used our blocks to make different patterns and the boys took turns adding the next block in the pattern.  We worked on 1-2 patterns, 1-2-3 and 1-1-2 patterns.  And then, once again following the most obvious progression, we used them to build rockets and spaceships  :)
