Just wanted to share a garden update :) The boys' garden did a LOT of growing while we were in California. Both grandmas and Auntie Liz came over regularly to take care of our veggies while we were gone and the boys were surprised to come home to a big green leafy garden! They've been able to pick their own tomatoes, green beans, Anaheim peppers, and basil so far. The tomatoes and green beans have never made it into the house... they are gobbled down on the spot. The basil has made its way on to our pizza, although they both enjoy nibbling a few leaves on the way in. And the peppers. Well, the peppers are just gosh darn funny! We did plant sweet peppers, but Jon got some spicy Anaheim pepper plants from a buddy of his at work who had started them in his hydroponics set-up. They have grown beautifully and we now have these giant peppers that the boys just can't resist!! But Oh My Gosh are they spicy!!! Jon can't even handle them!!! But does that stop our boys? Nope! They'll pick one fresh off the vine and chomp right into it. The first bite is usually okay because they don't get any seeds, but that second bite has them tearing up and hanging their tongues out!!! They yelp for water while making comical panting noises and its just so hard not to laugh. But the best part is that while we're running back to the house to get them a drink, they'll usually take another bite!!! Eventually we'll get them inside and scoop all the seeds out so they can sit down and enjoy the rest of their pepper, along with a solid 10 ounces of water. I can't believe they keep eating them, but I think they are just so excited to eat something fresh from their very own garden that they don't even care what it is :) And that is a beautiful thing.
On a not so beautiful note, something or someone has been stealing our cherry tomatoes. One day we'll go out and see a bunch of them that are turning orange and we'll tell the boys we have to give them one more day. Then when we go out the next day they are all gone. After a few days of disappointment, Jon decided to do the fatherly thing and protect his boys... which meant that any little critter who came near those tomatoes just had to go! We have relocated 2 chipmunks and a squirrel to Taylor and Jon just popped the rat that we caught in the trap. I keep telling him its a never-ending battle... he can't just shoot all of the small creatures in the neighborhood... but he feels like he's protecting his boys so he just keeps at it! So let this be a warning little squirrels- stay away from my boys' tomatoes!!!!
