Hi Bel-Air Association,Marine Debris Handling Guidelines

National Oceanic Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) information flyer:

http://marinedebris.noaa.gov/tsunamidebris/debris_handling.html

General Guidance

Be safe: Use common sense and follow general safety guidelines. If you don't know what an item is, don't touch it. If it appears hazardous, contact appropriate authorities.

Marine debris items or significant accumulations potentially related to the tsunami can be reported to DisasterDebris@noaa.gov with as much information as possible (including its location, the date and time you found it, photos, and any relevant descriptions). It is important to remember that not all debris found on U.S. shorelines is from Japan, so please use your discretion when reporting items.

Download Debris Handling Guidelines Flyer (317kb).

http://marinedebris.noaa.gov/tsunamidebris/pdf/debrisguidelines.pdf

Guidelines By Debris Type

Litter and other typical marine debris items
Examples: Plastic bottles, aluminum cans, buoys, Styrofoam Common marine debris types may vary by location. If practical, we encourage you to remove the debris and recycle as much of it as possible.

Potential hazardous materials (HAZMAT)

Examples: Oil or chemical drums, gas cans, propane tanks.
Contact your local authorities (a 911 call), a state environmental health agency, and the National Response Center at 1-800-424-8802 to report the item with as much information as possible. Do not touch the item or attempt to move it. Do not contact DisasterDebris@noaa.gov for response assistance

Derelict vessel or other large debris item

Examples: Adrift fishing boat, shipping containers
Contact your local authorities (a 911 call) and state environmental health agency to report the item. If the debris item is a hazard to navigation, contact the US Coast Guard Pacific Area Command at 510-437-3701 for assistance. Do not attempt to move or remove vessels.

Mementos or possessions

Examples: Items with unique identifiers, names, or markings
If an item can 1) be traced back to an individual or group and 2) has personal or monetary value, it should be reported to DisasterDebris@noaa.gov. NOAA will work with local Japan consulates to determine if they can help identify its owner.

Remains

It is highly unlikely that remains from the tsunami will reach the United States, but if you see human remains anywhere, contact local authorities (a 911 call) and report what you observed. Do not touch or attempt to move them.

Unknown item

If you don't know what it is, don't touch it. If you believe it is a hazardous item, contact local authorities and report it.

Concilmember Paul Koretz: Wilshire Ramps Reconstruction

To contact us Click HERE

Wilshire Ramps Reconstruction

Dear Friends,

Starting this Friday night, June 22nd, major work begins on the Wilshire Ramps Reconstruction – an effort that is being managed by Metro on behalf of Caltrans and in collaboration with the Los Angeles Department of Transportation and other agencies.

The good news is that the eventual outcome, once work is complete on the Wilshire Ramps Reconstruction, will be one of significant improvement for motorists traveling through the area. The Wilshire-405 "intersection" has long been considered among the worst designed intersections/interchanges in the state, leaving many drivers and passengers feeling like they're on a roller coaster ride when they're getting off or on the freeway.  Because of the Reconstruction, vehicles will have a longer and more graceful transition phase between the freeway and Wilshire, thereby providing greater safety and a steadier and speedier traffic flow on freeway and Wilshire alike.  Here is the link to the educational video that explains why Metro is rebuilding those ramps: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=S-5AF73Ce8g.
The bad news is that many of us are likely to suffer some inconvenience, maybe even major inconvenience, in the weeks and months to come, because of closures that will necessarily occur as work progresses. While the immediate phase that starts on Friday night is scheduled to last approximately three months, the entire Wilshire Ramps Reconstruction could last for more than a year.  There will be no magic detour – we will all just have to adjust as best we can, including by keeping track of changes in closures (some of them, overnight closures) as they occur.  That will be a big strain on those who live or work in the immediate area, but even those of you who travel infrequently through this area might want to determine in advance if any pertinent closures have been scheduled.
Metro has created some excellent tools for tracking the work and determining closures, and I recommend that you explore their use:

Here is the direct link to the Wilshire Ramps Reconstruction webpage:
http://www.metro.net/projects/I-405/wilshire-bl-ramps-reconstruction/.
The easiest way for someone to receive e-blasts and more frequent Construction Notices is to send an email to the project email address: i405@metro.net – you can always request to be deleted from that list, if you wish.
Each closure is posted on the Metro website – www.metro.net/405 – and on Metro's Facebook and Twitter pages – www.facebook.com/405project and twitter.com/i_405.

The Project hotline is  213.922.3665.

If you or your business have a robust website, here is a link to the applet that allows a webmaster to add a compact display version of daily closures: http://www.metro.net/projects/I-405/link-us/.
With an effort this mammoth, and with so many differing agencies and jurisdictions involved, even the best plans can prove problematic if there's a failure in communications and implementation, and if the people in their home communities are not recognized or heard in the process. It is also important to note that work on other portions of the 405 causes inconvenience for local residents, and we are always eager to find ways to mitigate any hardship. Please know that I always invite you to contact me and my office whenever you feel there might be a problem that we can help resolve, or when you have an idea for making our quality of life better.
Thank you all for your patience and for your love of community.
Sincerely,

PAUL KORETZ

'Rampture' Begins It's First Week Of Work Along The I-405 At Wilshire Blvd (Fox News)

To contact us Click HERE
Los Angeles, CA -
(CNS) L.A. today began its first work week of "Rampture'' - the three-month closure of the westbound Wilshire Boulevard onramp to the northbound San Diego (405) Freeway and the northbound 405's offramp to westbound Wilshire. The ramps were closed Friday night in the first phase of a yearlong effort to demolish and rebuild all eight ramps at the interchange. They are to be replaced with ramps designed to reduce traffic jams and dangerous lane-weaving. The work is part of a project to add a 10-mile carpool lane to the 405 through the Sepulveda Pass. The ramp closures are proving to be a source of anxiety for thousands of commuters scrambling to find alternate routes to and from the Westside, and residents of Westwood and Brentwood who expect that already congested routes - Sepulveda, Santa Monica and Sunset boulevards, for example - will experience even worse traffic jams. The Veterans Affairs West Los Angeles campus has advised employees to allow twice as much time as usual for commuting, the Los Angeles Times reported. To reduce cut-through traffic and help ensure access for emergency vehicles, the campus plans to close its gates on Eisenhower and Gorham avenues.UCLA has urged employees to telecommute, work alternative hours and carpool, bike or walk, according to The Times. And Blair House, a Westwood condo building on Wilshire, has agreed to subsidize monthly bus passes for its employees and caregivers, housekeepers and other workers employed by residents. On Friday night, two of eight of the Wilshire Boulevard on and off ramps to the I-405 were shut down as demolition got underway  This is part of the I-405 Sepulveda Pass Improvements Project, and no other intersection needs more improvement than the Wilshire Boulevard/I-405 interchange.  Drivers are merging on and off on a heavily congested Wilshire which creates hours of delay each year.

The first two ramps to close:
Ramp 1: The I-405 off-ramp to Westbound Wilshire
Ramp 2: Westbound Wilshire on-ramp to The I-405 North

Each series of ramp closures will be shut down every 90 days. All eight ramps are expected to be completed in at least a year.  The ramps were built in the '50s and need to be up to speed with earthquake standards of today.

In FOX 11's interviews with Metro's Dave Sotero and Westside City Councilman Bill Rosendahl, Rosendahl thinks traffic will be widely impacted on city streets and the 405 from LAX to the San Fernando Valley. Sotero thinks there will be a wide ripple effect on city streets, but not so sure about the I-405.

Westwood Village restaurant manager Andrew Clinco is concerned about reduced business and is working with his staff of 50 to get about half of them on a group bus for their commute.

So sorry this is a day late.  I was too wiped out to write last night!  But look on the bright side- you get TWO awesome posts today  :)

Yesterday was our first Saturday in Los Angeles.  We were a bit nervous to do the beach on a weekend as it sounds like they can get pretty packed, but there was a little spot that Jon and I were just dying to check out.  So we got up super early (being half way between Michigan and California time is quite convenient when it comes to beating the crowds!) and headed to Malibu.  Quite a ways up the Pacific Coast Highway at the very north end of Malibu is a small secluded beach called El Matador.  Or as Matthew calls it, El Salvador!  LOL!  We had about a half mile hike down to the beach.  Some of it was stairs, but a lot of it was dirt trail...  not easy with two toddlers in tow but they were just awesome little hikers.  Caleb quickly got distracted when he spotted his first California cactus, which was something on the top of their "must-see" checklist!  They were both so giddy with excitement...  I can't even explain how beautiful it is to see the joy on their faces when they finally get to see and explore something that they've been so eagerly waiting for.  And something so simple as a cactus, which as adults we would simply walk by without giving it a second glance.  But to two curious little two year olds, it was like seeing Disneyland for the first time  :)

Anyways- we finally made it down to the beach and it was just breathtaking!!!  Aside from the one modeling shoot and the one music video shoot, we were the only ones there for at least an hour.  All three of my boys ran straight for the rocks and tide pools to do some exploring.  Before I had met him, Jon had never been to the ocean and tide pooling was on the top of his bucket list.  So to see him get to do it with his two beautiful boys was almost as awesome as watching Caleb get his finger pricked on the cactus.  The boys weren't huge fans of the water washing in, but they liked standing on the rocks and touching the sea anemones.  Jon even caught them a crab to play with  :)  And they just LOVED playing in the sand in and around the caves.  I think they could sit there in the sand with a bucket and shovel all day if we let them!  Jon was able to go off and do some more exploring and tide pooling while the boys and I built sand castles, of which I must note that their favorite part is knocking them down!  We had a picnic lunch on the beach and then headed home just about when more people started to show up.  And by more people I mean like 10 more.  On the whole beach!

The boys zonked out in the car so we took the most beautiful drive home, but I must warn you that Mulholland Highway is NOT for the faint of heart!  However, if you can handle it, I highly recommend that it be on the top of YOUR bucket list!!!  Especially if you have toddlers.  And if its nap time  :)

We spent the afternoon at home and made a nice little dinner.  We've got such a nice mix of feeling like we're on vacation but also feeling like we're at home.  We can hang out, make our own meals, and let the boys ram around all they want to which is really nice!  At about 5:00 in the evening we realized that it was our first Saturday night in LA and we thought we ought to be out and about. We packed up and headed to Rodeo Drive.  Luckily there weren't any stores that even remotely interested us, but the people watching was fun and we found the bestest most amazingly awesome cupcake shop on Santa Monica Boulevard where we stopped for a little family treat.  On the way home we made one more stop at a beautiful little park in Beverly Hills.  The perfect ending to a perfect day.  Except that we came home and Matthew spent his second night in a row in the bog boy bed, which is still a bit hard for me to handle.

We awoke to the people below us having a breakfast party on their patio at 6:25am and what could only have been Zumba music blasting loudly somewhere below us.  We haven't heard a peep from any of our neighbors or anything from the street since we've been here, so we were quit perplexed as to why this place was rockin' out at 6:30 on a Sunday morning.  We never did find out.  Instead we got up and headed out to the Hollywood Farmers Market.  Surprisingly it was less than a 10 minute drive from our condo, and parking is free on Sunday mornings!

The market was a bit different than Eastern Market back home.  There was tons of fresh fruits and veggies, but unlike Eastern Market, there were all sorts of food stands and little clothing shops...  there was even a place that had goats!  Not sure what for, but the boys enjoyed petting a tiny little goat named Pumpkin.  But the biggest difference was the FRUIT!  You have never eaten a strawberry until you eat one fresh in California!  It was like a whole different experience. So for nearly two hours, we wove in and out of the fruit stands shoving our mouths full of fresh fruits- peaches, plums, oranges, blueberries, strawberries, blackberries, tangerines, melons- all the best we have ever tasted!  If we stopped to ask what something was, they'd just cut you a slice!  This one guy was selling all different kinds of melons and I swear he cut into at least five of them just so we could taste them all!  The boys were so seriously sticky...  it was a beautifully sweet sight  :)  Then I picked up some Pad Thai from the little Thai stand and Jon got a slice of New York style pizza and we sat down for a mid-morning lunch.  Our sleep schedules seem to have adjusted to the time change, but for some reason our eating schedules haven't!  We eat breakfast at 6:30 or so in the morning and then by 9:30 or 10:00am we're ready for lunch!  So we all eat a little Michigan timed lunch in the middle of the morning and then lunch again at California lunch time!  After lunch we went and walked Hollywood Boulevard for a bit and checked out some of the stars on the Walk of Fame.  Its a neat place to be, with all of the famous buildings towering over you, but the smell of urine and homeless people make it slightly less appealing than the other quintessential LA places we've been thus far!

After quite a nap debacle (trying to nap in the pack 'n plays:  Boys- 2  Exhausted Mommy and Daddy- 0), we headed up to my aunt and uncle's house for dinner.  Poor Caleb was such a wreck when we got there, but he finally settled down when Jon taught him how to blob lemons off of a big exercise ball  :)  We had such an amazingly wonderful evening- a delicious dinner that was right u our alley, lots of fun with the lemons and grapefruits from the trees in their backyard, and lots of skateboarding in their driveway.  The boys even ate the lemons and grapefruits...  Matthew ate the grapefruit without so much as a face, and Caleb would make a sour face then go for another bite.  Strange children!  It was so nice to be able to just sit and visit with my aunt, uncle, and cousin while we all watched the boys play...  we can't wait to do it again!

On June 13, 2012, the Bel-Air Association (BAA) hosted its Annual
Meeting at the beautiful Bel-Air Country Club. This year's
meeting marked the incredible milestone of 70 years in existence.

It was an exquisite evening that began by hosting the first ever
"Vendor Village," held in the foyer of the Bel-Air Country Club. The "village" featured several local vendors that provide exclusive discounts to Association members.

At 5:45pm, we opened the doors to a beautifully outfitted room
featuring wonderfully decorated tables, incredible flower
arrangements, vintage old-Hollywood posters and much more.

At 6pm, Executive Director Paulette M. DuBey and President Marvin
Elkin hosted a focused business meeting, highlighting several
accomplishments of the past year (Project Pothole, Operation
Guardrail, Keep Bel-Air Beautiful, Coyote Task Force, E-Prep,
etc).

Then the celebration really kicked-off, with a surprise guest
appearance by long-time Bel-Air resident & Association member
Bob Newhart.

At the end of his appearance, he introduced the second
entertainer of the evening, Robin Swenson, an excellent pianist
and singer who entertained the members with countless Sinatra
-style tunes and renditions. To celebrate the Association's 70th Anniversary, everyone
joined in signing "Happy Birthday."
The remainder of the evening was filled with a wonderful buffet
of hors d'oeuvres, wine, conversation and celebratory atmosphere.
