Because I'm terrible at sharing news in any kind of timely manner, I'll take this moment in January to say that in October, I became the newest writer for Craft Test Dummies, a super-comprehensive and amazing website that reviews the latest and greatest in craft products. Getting packages of crafty treats to review is certainly not helping my supply hoarding problem, but testing the stuff I get has helped me to branch out and use media I'd never considered before. I love it!
And dig this: along with the rest of the CTD team, I get to attend the Craft & Hobby Association Conference and Trade Show in LA this weekend! It's going to be awesome. I'm excited to see old crafty friends, make new ones, and hopefully get my hands on some sweet swag!

I'm also looking forward to eating (food in another city is always magical, even if it's Taco Bell) and petting Strudes.

Of all the dresses in film history, Debbie Reynolds' leaf dress from Singin' in the Rain has to be my favorite. I was reminded of this last weekend when we got to see the film for a mere $5 at Oakland's opulent Art Deco palace, the Paramount Theater.

I also think it would look really great on me (Debbie, like her daughter Carrie Fisher and moi, is 5'2" and prone to roundness). Until I get a million dollars to buy it away from the collector who owns the real deal (it's totally still around and wearable!), here's a little collage of treats you can find to recreate the look.

It's a wonderful thing they do, the Paramount, letting a bunch of clowns like me, families, and regular old folks have the run of the theater for one night per month, and I've vowed to get there more often. Here's the schedule if you want in!

Happy Valentine's Day: DIY Metal Valentine's Card

Happy Valentine's Day, everyone! This is a little different from the cute-cutesy stuff I normally post, but when I heard I heard about this project, I was totally enchanted and had to find out more. My bf is a machinist and works at an epic machine shop in San Francisco. They make all manner of things out of metal, from gates to signs to architectural flourishes you never even considered, using a waterjet machine.

It's pretty incredible to the layperson (me!) to see the stuff that goes on in there. His colleague Nick Foster found a way to use his shop skills to make a beautiful valentine for his lady, and I was so into it that I wanted to share his process and the final result! Here's how this very special valentine was made, in Nick's words:
all photos by Nick Foster
"The idea for this all-metal Valentine's Day card originally started out as a joke when browsing a selection of spring loaded door hinges. After realizing that small hinges with gentle springs were available, this self-closing Valentine's Day card was designed.

metal, valentine, diy, handmade, waterjet, firefly express, pollyannacowgirl, nick foster, design, metalworkThis 4" tall card was cut, along with lettering, on a waterjet machine.  The stainless steel hinge was then welded to the leaves. A short message is pounded into the back of the card using common letter punches and a hammer.

The heart shape is intended to function as a picture frame, holding a picture securely to the back leaf of the card!

This is an old-fashioned technique which involves spinning an abrasive circular brush against the stainless steel cover in a repeating grid pattern such that light is captured and reflected in an interesting pattern."

Incredibly cool, yes? Enjoy your day, treat yo'self no matter your romantic situation, and get ready to buy a ton of 75% off chocolate tomorrow. XO!

So sorry for our absence- we left on Friday morning to go up north for the weekend and now its Tuesday and I'm finally caught up and things are back to normal!

This weekend was the boys first ski outing of the season  :)  We got them out on skis once last year- at 2 years old!  Last year we had to borrow one pair of skis and rent another, but this year they were big enough to start the Junior Fit program through Boyne Country Sports so Grandma and Grandpa got them their very own skis for Christmas!!  But most importantly- we have the most wonderful place to stay and ski.  Family friends of ours have the most perfect up north ski cabin you could ever dream of and ever since I was in high school they have warmly opened their hearts and their home to our family and they invite us up to stay and ski multiple times a year.  I thought for sure we'd stop getting the invite when we added two screaming babies, and now two rambunctious toddlers, to the mix- but they still love us enough to have us all up there!  This weekend we went up both to ski and to kick of the Christmas season with the downtown holiday open houses in Petoskey and Harbor Springs.  Friday and Saturday evenings we bundled up and headed into two of my favorite places of all time for wonderful Christmas celebrations.  And in the mornings the boys hit the slopes!  I am going to save the video clips for our December video, but the pictures alone will show you the pure joy they felt on their skis!!!  Jon and my mom helped them ski, but my dad and I had the best seat in the house- we stayed at the bottom of the hill and got to see their magical smiles when daddy and grandma let them go so they could ski down to us on their own!!

Kathy and Henry- Thank you for opening your home to us and helping us create these wonderful experiences and memories!!!!!!!!
